Alzheimer’s disease affects more than memory; it can also significantly impact vision, which in turn creates challenges during mealtime. Changes such as reduced peripheral vision, difficulties with depth perception, and problems detecting colors or contrasts can make it harder for someone to see their food, use utensils, or even recognize what’s on their plate. These issues can lead to frustration, decreased food intake, malnutrition, and an overall decline in health.

To help, caregivers can make simple yet effective adjustments. Using high-contrast tableware, such as a red plate on a white tablecloth, can make food more visible. Simplifying meal presentations by serving smaller portions or finger foods can reduce overwhelm. Providing gentle verbal or visual cues, like demonstrating how to use utensils or reminding them to take bites, can encourage eating while fostering independence. A calm and distraction-free environment during mealtime also helps them focus and feel supported.

Mealtime is more than just eating—it’s an opportunity to preserve independence, dignity, and connection. By understanding how Alzheimer’s-related vision changes affect eating and applying practical strategies, caregivers can create a more enjoyable and nourishing experience.
