Dr. Maureen P. McCausland, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer for MedStar Health, discusses the history of NICHE at MedStar Health. MedStar Health is the largest health system in the Maryland/DC region and is comprised of 10 hospitals and 300 sites of care. NICHE began on one floor of one hospital, and now all 10 hospitals have fully implemented NICHE at Senior Friendly or Exemplar levels.

Recognizing the larger numbers of elders cared for at Medstar hospitals, the NICHE program also has the full support of MedStar’s Patient and Family Advisory Councils for Quality and Safety. They recognize the ability of the NICHE program to improve both the quality of care delivered to older adults and patient outcomes.

MedStar health has embraced the Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) Model and has trained over 700 GRN nurses on 46 units across the MedStar Health system.? This year, 20 MedStar nurses, comprised of NICHE Coordinators and GRNs, will attend the 2017 Annual NICHE Conference in Austin, Texas April 19-22. This conference has been a great way for MedStar nurses to share their work, network with other NICHE programs, and see the work of other NICHE organizations around the United States.
