Dr. Scott Betzelos discusses how Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has been moving towards becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO) over the past three years. He explains what a HRO is, and how when healthcare organizations utilize principles used by HRO, the chances that patient harm will occur is reduced.
These principles include commitment to resilience, deference to expertise, preoccupation with failure, reluctance to simplify, and sensitivity to operations. He shares how Inova is using the triad of HRO, Principles of Just Culture, the 4 teachable skills of TeamSTEPPS to demonstrate their commitment to keeping patients safe and free from harm on their journey to becoming a HRO.
Dr. Betzelos is the Vice President/Chief Medical Officer at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, and Chief Patient Safety Officer for the Inova Health System.
